The spring semester will soon end and Tucson will clear out as snowbirds and university students leave town. That can only mean one thing: summer is almost upon us.

If you would like to join the exodus without traveling far, escape the heat by camping on Mount Lemmon.

Start your Mount Lemmon journey on the Catalina Highway in the foothills of the Catalina Mountains just north of Tucson. The scenic drive passes many varied and beautiful campsites located within the Coronado National Forest.

Temperatures drop as you climb the 9,000-foot mountain, and the terrain changes from desert to pine forest. The elevation levels provide many choices for camping experiences, and Mount Lemmon has more than 1,100 miles of trails to explore.

Wherever your Mount Lemmon adventure leaves you, the campsites provide space for cars, tents and recreational vehicles. All of the campgrounds have restrooms.

Coronado National Forest is bear and mountain lion territory, so campers should take care to secure their food.

Rose Canyon is the first major campsite you’ll pass during your drive. The campground has a seven-acre lake nearby and takes reservations if you want to secure a spot.

The next campground along the route is Spencer Canyon. It is a little more secluded, so does not take reservations.

Both Rose Canyon and Spencer Canyon cost $18 per night for up to 10 people in two vehicles. No fire permit is necessary at either site.

Other Mount Lemmon campgrounds cost $10 per night for up to 10 people in two vehicles.

Get out of the heat and don’t think about school… it’s summer time. Relax during your camping trip on Mount Lemmon.

Posting locations of abandoned mines

In the past two years, two Arizonans have died from falls into unmarked abandoned mines. But if the detailed locations of the known abandoned mines are posted online will that protect people or will it serve as a guide for thrill seekers and result in more injuries and deaths?

This is Mine Safety Awareness Week in Arizona, and State Mine Inspector Joe Hart made the case to the state legislature about the need for more funding to identify and close abandoned mines.

Legislators gave little likelihood of that, given the state's financial situation.

Joe cautioned that while his office has an internal list of 10,000 abandoned mines, there are no resources to create a digital online listing or detailed map. The current map is too small to be useful.

For a list of abandoned mines to be useful to the public, the locations have to be detailed enough that anyone heading out to hike or offroad, could examine their planned routes to spot potential problems. But does that then create attractions for those who deliberately want to explore these old mines and end up trapped or hurt? My experience is that there are more problems from people who seek to go into mines than those who do so accidentally.

In general, I'm an advocate of providing the information and letting people make their own decisions. Give responsible recreationists information that can save their lives. The ones who misuse it may be our entries for the Darwin Awards.

Tucson Mountain Chaos

Tucson Mountain Chaos is a formal geologic name, describing one of the more confusing, complex, and controversial areas in southern Arizona. The Arizona Geological Society field trip today revealed that there are huge gaps in our understanding of this unit and the adjacent units that make up the rugged mountains on the west side of Tucson. [right, gray limestone blocks in Chaos above Trails End Wash. An excavated pit just below and to the right reveals a block (?) of 1.7 bya Pinal Schist]

There is no consensus even on the usage of the term "Chaos." What's the origin of thousands of feet of Cretaceous tuffs? Did they fill a caldera? Did flows outside the caldera pile up against local topographic barriers? Are the rhyolite peaks blocks in the Chaos, or later intrusions? Is the Chaos the result of ancient landslides? What is the green volcanic-looking material surrounding so many units? There are questions about every unit and every contact between units. Field trip leader Doug Shakel fostered discussion and debate at each stop. One of the more interesting ideas came from economic geologist Jim Briscoe who noted that the West Silverbell block appears to be laterally offset from the main Silverbell area by 2-3 miles. He postulated that the Tucson Mountain caldera could be the 'missing half' of the Silverbell caldera.

He happened to be near the Energizer booth, so he stopped by to see if he could buy a pack of batteries for his digital camera. They would not sell him a pack, but they did give him a pack of six batteries. He put two in his camera and offered our editors the other four.

We took a few of the electronic outdoor equipment out to compare how they work. We compare features of the Garmin Legend GPS, the Garmin Rino 120 GPS and a Motorola Talkabout T6320 Radio. These are some of the most feature rich units we have found over the years at prices we could afford. These units give us a lot of information and abilities when camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and geocaching. Usually we pass the units around or if everyone has their own radio / GPS then the Rino is carried and the other two units are carried in the pack as backups. Together these three units offer; two GPS Units, two Two Way Radios, two Compasses, three Altimeters, a radio scanner, national weather radio, barometer, sun and moon charts and a lot more.

Jupiter (on top) and Venus are close to each other, it's called a planetary conjunction
and the waxing crescent moon

They won't be this close together again until May 2013

The moon is only 252,000 miles away, Venus is 94 million miles away. And Jupiter is around 540 million miles away.
Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system, and it's diameter is 40 times the moons

Estimated peak viewing period: This will likely be the last week for fall colors on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests.

Coconino National Forest

Estimated percentage of current fall foliage: 85%-90% for the higher elevations and a 10%-20% for Oak Creek Canyon and lower
Area with greatest amount of color: Lockett Meadow (Inner Basin), the northern and southern slopes of the San Francisco Peaks, the northern part of Oak Creek Canyon and along the West Fork Trail
Recommended viewing routes: Great views of the slopes of the San Francisco Peaks from the Around the Peaks Loop scenic drive. In the line for the Scenic Skyride, and also along Snowbowl Rd (FR 516). Forest Road (FR) 552 to Lockett Meadow (Inner Basin). The trees are starting to change above Cave Springs Campground along Highway 89A. Also, along the Mogollon Rim and Forest Roads 300 and 321 are also great scenic drives.
Estimated peak viewing period: In the higher elevations the color is excellent and color will move down to lower elevations (Sedona, Red Rock RD) in 2-3 weeks.

On the Santa Catalina District, color change has started around the Palisades Visitor Center, just before Milepost 20 on the Catalina Highway.

Kaibab National Forest

Estimated percentage of current fall foliage:North Kaibab RD: 40% Williams RD: 35% Tusayan RD: 10%.
Area with greatest amount of color: : The North Kaibab District is currently the most colorful area of the Kaibab NF. The Williams Ranger District is also showing a lot of color, especially on Bill Williams Mountain and Kendrick Mountain
Recommended Viewing Routes:In Williams, take the drive up Bill Williams Mountain or hike in either Sycamore Canyon or up Kendrick Mountain. On the North Kaibab please visit the Kaibab Plateau Visitor Center for a fall “Fall Color Tour” information packet.
Estimated peak viewing period: Now is a great time to visit the North Kaibab and Williams Districts. Tusayan may show more color in a week or more.

For 150 years, it has stood in splendid serenity on the village green, harming no one and pleasing many.

Over the decades, the monkey puzzle tree at West Cross, near Swansea, became a much-loved local landmark.

But now it is facing the chop … because, in modern Britain, the needle-like points of its leaves are deemed a danger to health and safety.

One expert likened the effect of the needles to being pricked by a hypodermic syringe.

‘Every effort is made in this day and age to prevent children playing with discarded syringe needles,’ a report stated.

‘Every effort must be made to prevent children coming into contact with these potentially, equally sharp needles.’

‘The tree is part of the local landscape and has been for a century and a half. It rarely sheds its foliage and there are plenty of volunteers here who would be happy to clear up the needles.’

Her husband, a 57-year-old sustainability manager with Thames Water, said: ‘This is a crazy decision to cut the tree down.

I bought this small pocket tool at the local Ace Hardware store. I had been looking for the Swiss made one, but have not found them anywhere in town. So when I saw this one for $16 I bought it right away. It is well made, and the locks are great. The locks hold well and need to be deliberately disengaged. I have used it for a few jobs over the past few weeks and it seems to be holding up well. It is becoming loose, so I would not use it on a keyring. But it really is large to be carried every day. This would go well in a bag. Clipped on a ring in the bag so that the tool is always available but not lost at the bottom of a pocket. It is not heavy, but it is solid steel so it is not light either. This tool is sold as 10 Tools-in-1 with a 1) Knife, 2) Small Phillips screwdriver, 3) Small Flathead screwdriver, 4) Large Flathead screwdriver, 5) Bottle opener, 6) File, 7) Tweezers, 8) Large pliers, 9) Fine pliers, 10) Wire cutters and strippers

We have been looking for a source for these pocket tools and finally found one here in Tucson. The Swiss Tech tools have quite a following online and now there is a local source to buy them without shipping charges. We went to the store and bought a few styles to test out and add to our gear. We started out with the Screwz-All (4-1 tool), Utili-Key (6-1 tool) and Micro-Pro (9-1 tool). They each come in a plastic package with instruction card.

The Arizona Geological Survey released the first calculation of potash resources in the Holbrook basin of east-central Arizona, indicating there may be more than 2 billion tons present. [right, isopach map of potash in the Holbrook basin from the report]

Calculating tonnage for the entire deposit, assuming 6% and 20% grades, as reported by exploration programs, yields 682 million metric tons to 2.27 billion metric tons, respectively.

The Potash Corp. of Sasketchewan (PCS) says potash prices have more than tripled to more than $1,000 a tonne this year and inventories are at record lows. The PCS CFO said yesterday that potash producers are unable to supply 8 to 10% of world demand this year. He predicts a potash shortage for the next five years. A year ago, potash spot prices were about $200 per tonne and three years ago were in the $50-100 range.
